A Note from Joe: Welcome Back to School

Posted by on September 5, 2017

Dear Bar-T Families,

Happy First Day of School! I must admit, the first day of school is one of my favorite days of the year. I love welcoming new friends to Bar-T and seeing our returning students after a long summer, a bit taller, maybe a little tanner, and usually dressed up much nicer than they will be for the rest of the year.
For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Joe Richardson and I’m the CEO of Bar-T. My parents, Joe and Nancy Richardson, started Bar-T Kids Club in 1988 when I was a 1st grader at Goshen Elementary. I’ve been working at Bar-T for over 20 years and this morning I dropped off my own 2nd grader at Laytonsville Kids Club and walked my 4 year old into his class at Bar-T Thurgood Marshall Pre-K.
While we did have an amazing summer of fun at camp, there has been a lot going on behind-the-scenes to prepare for this school year. Our Kids Club team has spent the summer focusing on a few areas where we can improve, so I’m hopeful you’ll notice progress in the following:
  • Snack – We received a lot of feedback asking for healthier options and more variety in our snack menu. We met with our food provider and have revamped our menu to address these concerns. It’s not a massive overhaul, but I’m hopeful your children will appreciate the changes and adjustments we’ve made here.
  • Homework – This year at our staff orientation, we had two MCPS teachers come and train us on common core and MCPS Curriculum 2.0 so we’ll be better prepared to help our older students do their homework correctly.
  • Community – Something that’s very important to me is that you know the people working with your children each day. I also think it’s healthy for families to know each other within the school community and especially at Bar-T. This year we’re holding a “Back to Bar-T” night at every Bar-T program. This will be a chance to meet our staff, and your fellow Bar-T families, in a relaxed setting. I’m looking forward to these and hope you can all attend.
I’ll be sending out a monthly newsletter in the middle of the month with updates on what’s been going on at Bar-T. You should also be receiving an email from your Program Director on the 1st of each month. Please keep your eyes out for these emails as they contain important information about attending Bar-T.
Also, please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself if you see me out visiting your school. The best part of my day is going and spending time with the kids in our programs and I love meeting our families and getting to know them better, too.
